Why network marketing reminds me of weight loss schemes

I invariably get accosted by network marketers so can’t help but write about it.  Regular readers may have come across my post Seduced by Network Marketing? and be  familiar with my thoughts on the matter.  Recently, it occurred to me that there is a lot of similarity between network marketing and weight loss programs and this is why:

  1. Most people won’t stick with it.  Great numbers of people sign up and as a percentage, very few manage to stick it out.
  2. Exorbitant claims.  Lose 20kgs in 6 weeks!  Earn 6-figure income working part-time!  Basically, the message is get what you want fast.  How can anyone refuse?  However, as the image on the right implies…. buyer beware.
  3.  The sales script is incredibly similar.  Ever notice that language used by one network marketer is the same as the next?  Ditto for weight loss advertising.  It baffles me that people have not desensitized to it by now.
  4. Bogus vs Genuine.  There are certainly genuine schemes and programmes around but way more bogus ones exist and because they use the same language and advertising, it can get difficult to sort one from the other.

What do you think?  Any other similarities that I have missed?
